Basic Ingredients
-
- 1 cup oat flour (or whole wheat flour if your dog is not sensitive to wheat)
- 1/4 cup peanut butter (all-natural, ensure the only ingredient is peanuts)
- 1/2 cup cooked sweet potato, mashed (or unsweetened pumpkin puree)
Optional Substitution
- Unsweetened pumpkin puree (replace sweet potato as needed, not pumpkin pie filling)
- Cooked and mashed carrot (can also be substituted for sweet potato)
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Baking Tray: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Mix Sweet Potato and Peanut Butter: Stir together the mashed sweet potato and all-natural peanut butter in a bowl until well combined and smooth.
- Add Flour: Add the oat flour (or whole wheat flour) to the wet ingredients. If using homemade oat flour, simply process quick or rolled oats in a food processor until fine.
- Combine into Dough: Mix the flour into the wet mixture using a spoon or your hands until a cohesive, slightly sticky dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a splash of water or oat milk. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle in a bit more flour.
- Roll and Cut the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a silicone mat or wax paper and roll it out to a thickness between 1/4″ and 1/2″. Using a second sheet of wax paper on top can make rolling easier. Cut out shapes with a biscuit cutter or slice into small squares.
- Arrange and Bake: Place the cut treats onto the lined tray. Bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes. For softer treats, bake 10-12 minutes; for crunchier, bake 15 minutes.
- Cool and Store: Allow the treats to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to one week or freeze for up to two months.
Notes
- Approximate cost per batch: $0.83 CAD, much cheaper than store-bought options.
- To cook raw sweet potato: Peel and boil until soft, or bake at 425°F for 40-55 minutes until skin pulls away, then mash.
- You can substitute sweet potato with unsweetened pure pumpkin puree or cooked, mashed carrot.
- Always use unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Thickness of dough before baking will be the final thickness since there are no rising agents.
