Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Base
- 12-14 cups French bread, cut into cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
Fruit Topping
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced
- 1/2 cup blueberries
Finishing Touches
- 1-2 tbsp powdered sugar
- Maple syrup, to serve
- Vegetable oil or butter, for greasing
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole Dish: Grease a 9″x13″ casserole dish with vegetable oil or butter to prevent sticking.
- Assemble Bread Cubes: Cut French bread into cubes and fill the casserole dish up to approximately three-quarters full.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, 2% milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined and smooth.
- Combine Bread with Mixture: Pour the egg and milk mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the casserole dish, allowing the bread to soak up the liquid.
- Add Fruit Toppings: Slice strawberries and evenly distribute them along with blueberries on top of the bread mixture in the casserole dish.
- Refrigerate: Cover the casserole tightly with plastic wrap (saran wrap) and refrigerate for at least four hours or overnight to let the flavors meld and the bread fully soak the custard.
- Preheat Oven and Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator, uncover it, and bake for 35 to 50 minutes. Check doneness starting at 35 minutes; the casserole should be set and golden on top.
- Finish and Serve: Once baked, sprinkle the casserole with powdered sugar. Serve warm with maple syrup drizzled on top and enjoy your delicious berry French toast casserole!
Notes
- For best results, use day-old or slightly stale French bread to better absorb the custard mixture.
- You can substitute 2% milk with whole milk or a dairy-free alternative if desired.
- Feel free to use other berries, such as raspberries or blackberries, as toppings.
- Cover the casserole tightly with plastic wrap while refrigerating to prevent drying out.
- The casserole can be prepared the night prior for easy morning serving.
- If the top browns too quickly during baking, cover loosely with foil to prevent burning while the center finishes cooking.
