Description

Enjoy a restaurant-quality Bourbon Chicken at home with this easy, flavor-packed recipe! Tender chicken thighs are marinated and seared for maximum flavor, then tossed in a rich, sweet and savory sauce made with hoisin, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and brown sugar. Perfect for meal prepping or a quick weeknight dinner, this dish pairs beautifully with rice, noodles, or steamed veggies.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more as needed
  • 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs, rinsed and patted dry
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Prep the Chicken: Place your chicken thighs in a large bowl. Add the hoisin sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and poultry seasoning. Toss to coat all pieces evenly. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or, for deeper flavor, overnight in the refrigerator.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken thighs and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, until well charred and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add butter and minced garlic, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned. Stir in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ground ginger, and brown sugar. Continue to cook, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken.
  4. Combine Chicken and Sauce: Slice the cooked chicken into bite-sized pieces. Return them to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Simmer everything together for an additional 5 minutes so the chicken fully absorbs the flavors.
  5. Serve: Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds or green onions if desired. Great alongside rice, steamed vegetables, or noodles.

Notes

  • Storage: Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
  • Reheating: Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stove. Add a splash of water to loosen the sauce if needed.
  • Make Ahead: Marinate chicken overnight for meal prep or quick dinners.
  • Substitutions: No hoisin sauce? Substitute with BBQ sauce. For heat, add chili flakes or hot sauce.
  • Cooking Tip: A good char on the chicken adds extra flavor. Do not skip marination for best results.
