Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 6 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 6 tablespoons flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Crumb Topping
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
Other
- 1 pie crust
- 1/2 jar (or more) caramel topping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the pie.
- Make the Filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples with lemon juice, sugar, flour, and salt. Toss well to evenly coat the apples. Set the mixture aside to allow the flavors to meld.
- Prepare Crumb Topping: In a medium bowl, use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until crumbly. Then add brown sugar, oats, and a pinch of salt, mixing thoroughly to create a nutty, crumbly topping.
- Assemble Pie: Place the prepared pie crust into a pie dish. Add the apple filling evenly into the crust. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples, covering them completely.
- Initial Bake: Cover the edges of the pie crust with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
- Continue Baking: Remove the foil from the edges and place the pie back in the oven. Bake for an additional 30 to 45 minutes, or until the edges are bubbling and golden brown.
- Add Pecans: When there are 5 minutes left on the baking time, sprinkle the chopped pecans over the pie to toast slightly as the pie finishes baking.
- Drizzle Caramel: Remove the pie from the oven and immediately pour half a jar (or more if desired) of caramel topping over the warm pie.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly to set the caramel before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy the perfect blend of tart apples, crumbly topping, and buttery caramel.
Notes
- This isn’t your average apple pie recipe! It features a classic apple filling topped with a nutty, oat-based crumble and drizzled with rich, buttery caramel sauce for an indulgent flavor experience.
- Using Granny Smith apples provides a tart contrast that balances the sweetness of the caramel and topping.
- Covering the pie crust edges with foil during baking prevents burning, ensuring a perfectly baked crust.
- For an extra decadent touch, add more caramel topping as desired.
