Ingredients
Scale
Dough and Seasoning
- 13.8 ounce can pizza dough
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Filling
- 8 oz pepperoni slices
- 1 1/2 cups (170g) shredded mozzarella cheese
Topping
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
Serving
- Marinara sauce, for dipping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the pepperoni rolls.
- Roll Out Dough: Roll the pizza dough out on a piece of parchment paper into about a 10×15 inch rectangle, creating an even surface for toppings.
- Prepare Butter Mixture: Combine Italian seasoning and garlic powder into the melted butter, mixing thoroughly. Brush half of this mixture evenly over the dough surface and reserve the rest for later.
- Add Toppings: Layer the pepperoni slices evenly over the dough, overlapping slightly as needed, then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
- Roll the Dough: Starting from the long side, tightly roll the dough into a log shape with the seam side facing down. Keep it on the parchment paper and transfer it to a baking sheet.
- Apply Egg Wash: Whisk the large egg in a small bowl and brush it evenly over the top and sides of the dough log to promote browning and shine.
- Bake First Phase: Bake the roll in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until just starting to brown.
- Brush with Remaining Butter: Reheat the reserved butter mixture if necessary and brush it over the roll for extra flavor and color. Then bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until golden brown and hot throughout.
- Add Parmesan and Cool: Remove the roll from the oven, sprinkle grated parmesan cheese over the top, and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes for easier slicing.
- Slice and Serve: Slice the roll into 1-inch thick pieces and serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- If you prefer a spicier version, consider adding crushed red pepper flakes to the butter mixture.
- Make sure to tightly roll the dough to prevent cheese and fillings from leaking out during baking.
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before slicing to maintain shape and prevent the cheese from oozing out.
- Marinara sauce can be served warm or at room temperature depending on preference.
- This recipe yields approximately 15 slices, perfect for sharing at gatherings or as a party appetizer.
