Ingredients
- 1kg potatoes, peeled
- 100g cheese, grated (such as Colby or your favorite melting cheese)
- 1.5 cups cream and/or milk (e.g., 3/4 cup cream and 3/4 cup milk for a half-and-half mixture)
- 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 190°C (375°F) and allow it to fully preheat while you prepare the dish.
- Prepare the potatoes: Thinly slice the peeled potatoes evenly to ensure they cook uniformly throughout.
- Mix the cream and garlic: In a bowl, combine the cream and/or milk with the crushed garlic, then season generously with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor of the bake.
- Assemble layers: In an ovenproof dish, place a thin layer of the sliced potatoes on the bottom. Sprinkle a layer of grated cheese over the potatoes, then add dollops of the creamy garlic mixture on top. Repeat these layering steps using all the potatoes and the remaining cheese and cream mixture.
- Bake: Place the assembled dish in the preheated oven and bake for 80 minutes, or until the potatoes are fully cooked and tender, and the top is beautifully golden and bubbly.
Notes
- If preparing this dish gluten free, always check labels on processed items like sauces to ensure they do not contain gluten.
- You can adjust the cream and milk ratio based on your dietary preferences or what you have available; a half-and-half mix works wonderfully.
- Feel free to use any cheese that melts well; Colby is recommended for its melting quality and flavor.
