Description
Microwave Baked Apples is a quick and easy dessert featuring sweet, soft apples stuffed with raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. This recipe uses the microwave to create a warm, fragrant treat that can be enjoyed as a dessert or a cozy breakfast, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt.
Ingredients
Scale
Apples and Filling
- 4 apples (such as Gala or Fuji)
- 4 Tbsp raisins (or use dried cranberries or currants for a different flavor profile)
- 4 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (or to taste)
- 4 tsp butter or margarine
Cooking Liquid
- 1 cup water
Optional Topping
- 1 cup vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Core the apples and peel the top 1/2-inch of the apple around the core to allow the filling to sit nicely.
- Stuff the apples: In the hollowed-out core of each apple, combine 1/4 of the raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Pack the mixture down firmly with your thumb to ensure all filling fits inside.
- Arrange for microwaving: Pour the water into the bottom of a flat microwave-safe dish with sides. Place the apples right side up in the center of the dish.
- Cover and microwave: Cover the dish with plastic wrap, leaving a small vent for steam to escape. Microwave on full power for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the apples are fragrant and soft to the touch. Cooking times may vary depending on your microwave.
- Serve or prepare syrup: Remove the apples carefully from the microwave. Transfer them to small serving bowls and spoon some of the cooking liquid from the dish over each apple.
- Optional syrup thickening: If desired, pour the remaining liquid into a small saucepan and simmer for 4 to 5 minutes to reduce and thicken it into a syrup.
- Serve warm: Serve the baked apples hot, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt for a creamy contrast to the warm fruit.
Notes
- This recipe is quick and versatile, perfect for a last-minute dessert or a warm, comforting breakfast.
- For a different flavor, substitute raisins with dried cranberries or currants.
- Microwave cooking times can differ depending on the appliance wattage; adjust the cooking time as needed to ensure apples are tender.
- To make it dairy-free, use margarine or a plant-based butter substitute and skip the optional ice cream or choose a dairy-free alternative.
