Description

This Scarecrow Dip Platter is a perfect spooky Halloween snack featuring a creamy, savory bacon and caramelized onion dip that pairs wonderfully with fresh veggies and Wheat Thins. The recipe includes instructions for preparing crispy bacon and slowly caramelized onions, blended together with mayonnaise and sour cream for a rich and flavorful dip that’s sure to be the highlight of any Halloween gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Dip Ingredients

  • 2 medium sized onions, cut into thin rings
  • 6 strips of thick bacon or 10 thin slices
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2/3 cup sour cream
  • Dash of salt (for the onions, very minimal)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Place the thinly sliced onions in a skillet over low heat, sprinkle a very minimal dash of salt over them, and cook slowly for about an hour until they turn a blonde to brown color, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Once done, remove from heat and allow to cool.
  2. Cook the bacon: Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C). Place the strips of bacon on a foil-covered baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until the bacon is dark brown and crispy. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
  3. Chop and combine: Once both the caramelized onions and bacon are cooled, place them in a food processor and pulse until they are thoroughly chopped but still have some texture.
  4. Mix the dip: Transfer the chopped bacon and onion mixture to a medium-sized bowl. Add the mayonnaise and sour cream, and mix well until fully combined.
  5. Chill and serve: Cover the bowl and chill the dip in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve cold with fresh vegetables and Wheat Thins for dipping.

Notes

  • Slow caramelization of onions is key to developing a rich, sweet flavor without burning.
  • Adjust the salt carefully as bacon adds significant saltiness to the dip.
  • For a smokier flavor, use smoked bacon or add a splash of smoked paprika to the dip if desired.
  • This dip pairs excellently with a variety of fresh vegetables such as carrots, celery, and bell peppers in addition to Wheat Thins.
  • Leftover dip can be refrigerated for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
